Honoring Dr. Stephen Sinatra – A Pioneer in Integrative Cardiology 

With deep sadness, we share the news of respected integrative cardiologist and former member of the A4M Board of Scientific Advisors, Dr. Stephen Sinatra’s passing. Dr. Sinatra was one of the most highly regarded and sought-after cardiologists whose whole-person approach to cardiovascular care revitalized patients with even the most advanced forms of disease.

A board-certified cardiologist specializing in integrative medicine, Dr. Sinatra was also certified as a bioenergetic psychotherapist and nutrition and anti-aging specialist – making his education and expertise genuinely unparalleled.

During the course of over 40 years of clinical practice, research, and study, Dr. Sinatra obtained numerous certifications, published a dozen best-selling books, and helped discover and develop healing strategies that guide integrative and anti-aging practices today.

Accomplishments in the Medical Field

Dr. Sinatra began his career as an attending physician at Manchester Memorial Hospital in Connecticut, later serving as the chief of cardiology, director of medical education, director of echocardiography, director of cardiac rehabilitation, and director of the weight-reducing program at the same facility.

Founding the New England Heart Center was his next step, after which he became known as one of America’s top integrative cardiologists. By combining conventional medical treatments for heart disease with complementary nutritional, anti-aging, and psychological therapies, Dr. Sinatra paved the way for the development of integrative cardiology.

Dr. Sinatra was a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and American College of Nutrition, a Certified Nutrition Specialist with the American Nutrition Association, and a Certified Bioenergetic Psychotherapist.

A Revolutionary Clinical Approach

With a strong belief that emotional stress is the essence of heart disease, Dr. Stephen Sinatra proved the case for preventive healthcare, arguing that prevention is more manageable than solely treating symptoms.

Dr. Sinatra’s holistic methods focused on reducing inflammation while maximizing the heart’s ability to produce and utilize energy with an individualized approach to each patient.

Through his books and appearances on major media outlets – including CNN, MSNBC, and The Today Show – Dr. Sinatra spread health awareness and education, helping innumerable people improve their cardiovascular health and lead longer healthier lives.

In 1995, he joined Healthy Directions as a speaker and adviser for the research and development of nutritional supplements. In 2010, Dr. Sinatra founded the HeartMD Institute, an informational website dedicated to promoting public awareness of integrative medicine.

Coenzyme Q10 and Metabolic Cardiology

In the early 1980s, Dr. Sinatra was among the first cardiologists to recognize and leverage the healing powers of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) to spark energy production in his patients. His investigation of the compound resulted in an extensive body of research on its numerous benefits in cardiovascular health, particularly in treating congestive heart failure.

Fueling the heart’s metabolism with CoQ10, magnesium, and other beneficial nutrients, Dr. Sinatra revealed and later verified the positive impact of metabolic cardiology as a treatment strategy.

Contributions to A4M 

A long-time member of the A4M community and former member of the A4M Board of Scientific Advisors, Dr. Sinatra served as a distinguished speaker and educator. He led advanced education modules on cardiovascular breakthroughs, contributed to developing educational resources, and starred in many Redefining Medicine podcast episodes.
